What is Addison's disease? Causes, symptoms and treatment of Addison's disease.

Addison's disease – what is it and what causes it?
It is a disease caused by the inability of the adrenal glands to release hormones (due to adrenal cortex damage). Disruption to the immune system is responsible in the majority of cases [3]. More specifically, an autoimmune attack (i.e. an attack carried out by one's own immune system) on the adrenal cortex is a likely cause [2].

Symptoms
Symptoms include weakness, wasting, hypotension (low blood pressure) and having a darker skin complexion [1]. Furthermore, feeling dehydrated and the loss of weight are also symptoms [3].

Treatment
Treatment involves relevant HRT (hormone replacement therapy) in order to replace the lost hormones [1].
